The lead up to Christmas begins tomorrow with the beginning of advent. I loved my advent calendar when I was little. It was just a beautiful picture with little doors to open each morning. We didn't use the kind of advent calendars that are common now. Personally I think kids get enough treats etc on Christmas Day without one a day in the lead up to it. But that's just me. Advent calendars are a nice visual way to show children 'how much longer'... This idea of a starry advent sky is not my own, but a Waldorf one, which I read about in a couple of Waldorf resources. The idea is to create a sky and each day (well I think evening would be nice) up until Christmas, add another star into the night sky. It would make a neat backdrop for a nativity scene if you use one, or just as is up on the wall. So here's how I made mine: I used watercolours and thick paper soaked for 10mins then laid on a wooden board (happens to be the step of my sons high chair!), then began with darker colours around the edge, purple, to dark blue, to a lighter blue then fading to white in the middle. The circular space creates a focal point for the larger 'Star of Bethlehem' if you chose to make one, otherwise it just creates a lovely effect :). It's not mandatory though. If the kids are painting the sky - they may chose another way! Any application will work, and any type of paint too. I do strongly suggest a few different tones of blue, and perhaps the purple too to help give it dept though.
